Fashion Print Design.

Fashion prints are a creative way to make a garment more interesting. They can vary in bold colours, techniques and allow you to explore many different styles.

Mary Katrantzou is an iconic fashion print designer known for her bold graphics, she has had her collections featured in magazines such as vogue. You can see that all of her designs are very vibrant and stand out straight out because of the bright and eye catching colours she has chosen. The top four pictures actually show pencils printed on to the garments repeatedly in different directions, she often does this to sculpt and mould the body of the model to create an illusion. The bottom row of pictures show her fall 2011 collection which features some animal print and floral patterns. Here you can see a lot of bright colours again, some even are quite opposite to each other and would make you think they will clash but actually create quite an eye catching effect.

Amy Butler

Amy Butler is a upcoming print designer, this is her bag/travel collection. From the photos I can see that a lot of the print is inspired by floral patterns and also paisley/mandala pattens. She uses a lot of eyecatching colours, however compared to Mary Katrantzous work these colours arent as outgoing, although they do go very well together. Alot of the patterns on these are quite repetitive such as the repetition of the paisley prints, I prefer Mary Katrantzous techique as she has distored her prints to create the effect of an illusion which makes the garment a lot more interesting.

Jonathan Saunders is also cosidered an iconic print designer. I have chosen to look at his Winter 2015-16 collection. I think the prints on these garments look quite futuristic which goes well with the boots and glasses the models are wearing. I think the designs also remind me of the 60’s style, especially the 2nd outfit as the use of block colours on garments was very popular in that era. I like the colours that are used on these garments, they  are quite different to the other bright colours ive seen whilst conducting my research, I particulaly like the combination of lilac and silver/grey. The second set of photos also give off quite a 60’s vibe through the used of bright yellows and A line dresses, as these were very common then. The patterns are quite floral similar to Amy Butlers work, and each pattern is contrasting the base colour.

William Morris was an English Textile designer known for his repeat pattern wallpaper prints. Looking at his images I've noticed he uses a lot of floral and nature patterns, such as trees and birds. He uses a lot of colour, however all the colour looks quite vintage and you can recognise straight away it can be used on a wallpaper.

Alexander McQueen was a British Fashion Designer. He is known for having worked as chief designer at Givenchy from 1996 to 2001, aswell as having found his own label. The prints I have looked at are from his 2010 collection, they are repeat patterns that resemble butterfly wings which is what he was inspired by (Nature and evolution). I like the way he has taken a section of the pattern and created a dress, this makes it more likely to be unique. This could inspire me to create one big repeat pattern, and then take a piece of it and put it on my deconstructed jacket, or even create a sleeve/collar out of it.
